Alden's Life and Work
1893, January 8
Katharine Leavitt Alden is born in Ashmont, Massachusetts.
1897
Boston Society of Arts & Crafts is founded.
c. 1910 -1914
Alden attends the Normal Art School.
1908
The Saturday Evening Girls Club teaches immigrant girls to make pottery at Paul Revere Pottery.
1915
Alden works as occupational therapist during World War I.
1920s
Alden teaches crafts classes in western Massachusetts and teaches weaving at Luther Gulick Wohelo Camp in Sebago, Maine.
1932
Alden arrives in Plymouth at the invitation of Charles S. Strickland of Old Colony Trust to teach crafts. She founds Plymouth Pottery Guild and creates the workshop and gift shop in the Sparrow House.
c. 1932-1936
Alden attends Alfred University to develop glazes that would fire well using Plymouth clay. She also teaches state-sponsored craft classes at the Sparrow House.
1934, 1936, 1937
Alden exhibits work at the Boston Society of Arts & Crafts and the Worcester Museum of Art.
1976, April 21
Katharine Alden dies at the Newfield House in Plymouth.
1990
A commemorative Exhibit of Katharine Alden’s work is shown at the Richard Sparrow House.
